Advanced Class Spring 2006!
Advanced Class Spring 2006!
The first trip we took in the Spring class was a float tube trip to Danielle's Res. in Idaho. We did fine but only 3 of us made it to double figures. Then the class went up to the Hamms Fork. The following week we headed to the Madison River in Montana. Expecting a blowout with high water, not many joined us. I'd say only 15 students came. But those that did were well rewarded. I personally put 15 in the net before lunch. I ended up with 23 netted by about 7pm. There were some student with even more fish than that. I didn't get all the numbers. The Madison fished great! The high and off colored water was not even a factor. It did snow on us however, but cleared up after lunch. Yes, it was good day of fishing. We BBQ-ed hamburgers in the parking lot. One of our best days ever on the Madison. The Madison is back! There was a time not too long ago when whirling disease had taken a toll on the river. But those days have passed. This year's higher water only helps in that regard. Our last trip to Lewis Lake was good too. The fishing was fine, but we lost two hours of fishing due to an over-zealous, power-hungry, rookie park ranger who chose to hassle us. Other than that, it fished  pretty good. Well, average. I put 6 Macs in the net, many other students also boated some Browns.  If you missed the spring advanced class, I feel you really missed out.  No worries, join us this fall.  The fall advanced class, in my mind, is the best class we do all year.  We start in November.  Send me an e-mail and I'll get you "hooked up".  -mike
The Spring 2006 Advanced class was great! We had such fun people in the class, and we caught some nice fish. The Hamms Fork River in particular fished as well as it has ever fished; dating back to our class's first journey to the Hamms back in 1995. Back then Chetty was still alive. I think the fishing was so good because the drought is over and the water is back up. The higher water has allowed the chub population to return giving the Rainbows such good forage. The day we were there, I put 34 fish in the net and still spent most of the day helping students. Of those fish, 12 of them were over 24 inches and 2 of them were over 26". It was ridiculous!!!!! Most everyone on the trip caught the biggest fish of their lives. My son Mickey included. (Well, until this summer in Alaska, where he landed a 50 pounder.) Many in the class also caught the most they've ever landed in one day. Most of the class were in double figures. I'm sorry if you missed this trip, it was a good one.
Out of the high water of the Madison River Spring 2006, this 8 pound Brown took a "Mean Gene".
Typical Hamms Fork Rainbow.  Took a Mike's Hammy streamer pattern.  Spring 2006
