I started fly fishing in 1970 while on an Air Force assignment in Newfoundland Canada.
I had no idea that starting out fly fishing for Atlantic Salmon kind of like
starting at the top of the game. Needless to say I was hooked, so to speak,
on the sport. I continued my fly fishing pursuit on my next two assignments in
Northern California, Michigan. My next two assignments, Germany and Nebraska,
didn't offer much in the way of fly fishing opportunities. My last assignment was
to Hill AFB here in Utah resurrected my fly fishing interest. I remember my
first year here celebrating opening day on Lost Creek reservoir in the spring and
a memorable day on Henry's lake that fall. A couple of years ago a friend of mine told me about Mike's class. I was interested in learning about nymph fishing since I has only fished dry flies and streamers. My first class started an odyssey that has lasted since that first class in Feb of 2001 to the present. I call the advanced and extreme classes "Mike's fishing club" because of the camaraderie that the students develop during the class. Every trip is an adventure filled with the stuff that makes for great fish stories. One of the more significant benefits is being able to assist Mike as a helper for his beginning classes. I truly get a thrill in helping a newbee fly fisherman hook and land their first fish or helping them through the mysteries of tying on flies and droppers or building their first leader.
