Note: If you found out about this class thru the Davis County Community School mailer; please take not. Due to possible injury during the fieldwork, Davis High cannot list or even talk about the curriculum outside of class. Therefore the fly fishing class is only listed as a $35.00 class in the mailer. The portion of the class that takes place outside of the classroom is not listed in the mailer. There are three fishing days associated with the class that is not listed in the mailer. The actual cost of the class is $90.00 plus a $5.00 lab fee. Total cost $95.00. The fee will be collected the first night of class. We will go fishing 3 times. Note: Due to the possibility for injury while participating in the fielding work out on the river, the student must understand that students can only participate in the three river fishing classes on the condition that they understand that the river portion of the class at their own risk. Davis High, nor any instructor or helper is in no way liable to any injury suffered by any student. All students are participating in the river fishing portion of the class; AT THEIR OWN RISK. -mike |
My Beginning Fly Fishing courses are very compressive. However, if you have never
fly fished before do not fear. I will "take care of you." I want you to
succeed. I have a, "fool proof," step by step system that will make you a,
"great fly fishermen." In fact, if I may be so bold, "skunk proof." But
most of all we have fun! |
This is a beginning fly fishing class. The main purpose of the course is TO
HAVE FUN! Fly fishing is a pastime that has been enjoyed by many for a very long
time, and it's currently experiencing enormous growth in popularity. The enjoyment
one experiences while fly fishing is the reason for such popularity. Fly
fishing, however, is a very cerebral endeavor. By learning the skills used in
fly fishing, one cane significantly enhance the overall enjoyment one receives
from the sport. |
Most of the skills covered in the class are knowledge based. Essentially, the more
you know, the better skilled you are the more fun you will have, The "physical"
skills needed for the pursuit are minimal. Casting is one of the few physical
skills needed in fly fishing, and that technique will be covered within the course
work. |

Questions I often get asked. |
#1.) Is there a difference between the beginning and the Intermediate classes? No. They are the same class. However, they are not the same students. It seems the "true," beginners tend to gravitate to the Beginning Class. Those that have fished before tend to move to the Beginning/Intermediate Class. Nevertheless the instruction is the same in both classes. You see, I only know how to teach someone to fly fish and that is from start to finish. I know not everything is absorbed by every student, but one will still learn to fish, even though others will learn more. In truth there is so much to learn that many, many of my students take the class over and over again. Interestingly they always say that they learned the most the in the most resent class they took. In conclusion, chose the class that best suits your schedule; you will learn the same stuff. For example on casting night my so called, "beginners," in the Tuesday class tend to out cast the "more advanced students," from Wednesday night. So there really isn't a lot of difference. |
#2.) Can I come on another night if I have a conflict? Yes, the classes are in sync. The same lecture for both classes. Therefore, you can come to the Wednesday class if you have a scheduling conflict, or vice versa, but not both classes. You can only attend one class a week. Hopefully you will not come to the wrong class every week either. The reason is there are no seats. Both classes will sell out. |
#3.) If I already know how to fly fish is the class still good for me? Yes. I can't tell you how many people come to me saying that they are already a good fly fisherman only to tell me later that they never imagined that there was so much to learn. The class will hone your skills in different directions. For example many men send their wives to my class. Then the husband shows up in the class the next session saying that they didn't like getting out fished by their wife. I don't want to sound puffed up but that is true. I always worry when someone who has been fishing for more than 30 years takes my class, however none has ever said that they did not learn from my class. |
#4.) What is a Red Hat? Red Hats are awesome! These are former students who have mastered my techniques and have come back on the river days to help the new students. They don't even carry rods when they come; they come to the river only to help you. Every student need's some personal instruction. They work with you one-on-one so everybody has a quality experience. I make them wear red hats so you can identify them. These "Red Hats," as I call them do not receive any pay for helping it is all on a volunteer basis. Be sure to tell your Red Hat thanks! |

#5.) If I have never fly fished will I feel comfortable? |
Yes, yes, yes! This a beginning fly fishing class I will never talk down to you!
We start from the beginning, making sure to cover all the basics. Most of the students
in the class are also beginners. There is allot of camaraderie among the
students. The best thing you are likely to gain from the class is a fishing buddy.
You should not feel intimidated by those in the class who are already very
accomplished fly fisherman. I have a system that even the well seasoned fly fisherman
has yet to learn. Remember the red hat that is their to help you is their
to help you, he is yours for the day. Our goal is to make you successful. |
Why is the High School only charging for the classroom portion of the fee? |
Years ago in a scuba diving class taught at Layton High School there was some sort
of an injury and a law suit. Therefore Davis county schools has to separate itself
financially, as well as legally from the possibility of any liability due
to injury. |
